#Tom Daley wins Olympics bronze in 10m platform amid knitting fame

Tom Daley won a fourth medal in Tokyo for team “Great Knittin.”

The British star diver, who has gained fame from knitting during his Olympic downtime, will need to crochet himself another medal pouch after claiming bronze in the men’s 10m platform dive on Saturday, his fourth medal (and third bronze) in his fourth Olympics.

“KNITTING MY WAY TO OLYMPIC MEDAL NUMBER 4! I can’t believe it!” Daley wrote on Instagram. “Thanks for all your support and I am glad to be out there representing Team Great Knittin’ ❤️😜❤️🧶”

The 27-year-old, who knitted a holder for the gold he won in the synchronized 10m platform, led the six-round 10m event until the fourth, when he was overtaken but held on for third. China’s Cao Yuan took gold and Yang Jian silver.

US divers Jordan Windle and Brandon Loschiavo came in ninth and 11th, respectively.

For Daley, it’s another sign his method of decompressing is working.

“One thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting and crochet and all things stitching,” he said in an Instagram video, his “madewithlovebytomdaley’ account exploding to more than a million followers.

The hobby serves another cause, too.

Daley’s father, Robert, died of brain cancer in 2011. After Daley took up crocheting during the pandemic, he began auctioning off his creations to raise money for Brain Tumour Charity, a world leader in researching the ailment.

The proceeds are surely skyrocketing during an Olympics in which he has become a star. He told reporters recently he only had about 70,000 Instagram followers. But the world has taken notice.

“It’s kind of gone a little bit nuts,” he said.
