A special teaser trailer and theatrical screening schedule for the upcoming film trilogy Touken Ranbu – Hanamaru – Setsugetsuka has been released by the anime’s production team. Part one will screen on May 20th, followed by part two on July 8th, and part three on September 1st. 

The new film trilogy is based on the Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru anime series that first aired in 2016. A second season was broadcasted in 2018, with Crunchyroll and Funimation streaming both seasons as they aired. A compilation film premiered on December 1, 2022. The anime series is also notable for featuring an ensemble cast of male seiyuu for each season. 

Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru itself is based on a free-to-play collectible card online game developed by Nitroplus and DMM Games. The game series also inspired another anime adaptation in 2017 titled Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu that was helmed by Ufotable. 

Funimation describes the series as: 

In the year 2205, the past is threatened by the historical revisionists who seek to change it. Protecting history becomes the task of a boisterous band of swords that are brought to life, including the glamorous Kashuu Kiyomitsu and the kindly Yamatonokami Yasusada. Beyond their battles, these legendary swords from different eras lead charming daily lives.
