#Thousands without power as powerful storm moves through New England

Hundreds of thousands of New England residents were left without power Monday morning, as a powerful storm ripped through the region, bringing heavy rain and some flash flooding.

Just after 10:30 a.m. EST Monday, there were 121,118 Massachusetts customers out of power, out of approximately 2.88 million. In Connecticut, there were about 82,000 customers without power, out of approximately 1.66 million. In Maine, there were 101,852 customers without power, out of 852,014. New Hampshire had 40,016 customers without power, out of about 756,000. In New York, there were 47,830 customers without power, out of approximately 7.75 million. In New Jersey, 46,412 customers were without power, out of approximately 4.13 million.

The National Weather Service warned of high rates of local flooding as the storm moves northward.

“Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall will continue to stream northward, overrunning a warm front currently draped along the coastal areas from eastern VA through southern ME,” NWS said in its latest update.

The NWS further warned of a “narrow axis of marginal but sufficient instability” expected to develop on the coast. In parts of New Jersey through southern New York, Connecticut and western Massachusetts, there is the “highest probabilities of seeing intense rain rates” reaching or exceeding about 1 inch per hour.

“The combination of the prolonged rainfall and narrow window of higher rain rates is driving the flooding concern over the very urbanized corridor from northern NJ, southern NY, and portions of CT/western MA where event totals may exceed 5″ locally,” the NWS said.

Many schools in the region were reportedly delayed as officials warned people to not drive through flooded areas.

Airports saw many flight delays in the area. More than 100 flights were canceled at Logan International airport in Boston and more than 200 were delayed.
