#Thousands of dollars of copper wire stolen from NYC subway stations

Burglars entered through manholes on the 34th Street and Canal Street subway stations and stole thousands of dollars worth of copper wire, authorities said Friday.

An estimated 30,000 feet of copper wire was jacked along the 1, 2,3 subway lines on Oct. 23, causing $10,000 worth of losses, police sources said.

Police said the suspects must have known where to enter to get to the wire.

The MTA and NYPD are investigating how the copper was copped.

“As soon as it was determined that copper wire was missing from tunnel areas, we launched an internal review and have notified the NYPD and MTA inspector general,” said MTA spokesman Tim Minton.

“We take this matter very seriously and will cooperate fully with the independent investigations into what occurred.”
