#Thom Brennaman resigning from Reds job after anti-gay slur

Longtime Reds play-by-play man Thom Brennaman is resigning from Fox Sports Ohio after he was suspended last month for using a homophobic slur that was caught on air by a hot mic.

“My family and I have decided that I am going to step away from my role as the television voice of the Cincinnati Reds,” Brennaman said in a statement to ABC-affiliate WCPO in Cincinnati. “I would like to thank the Reds, Reds fan and the LGBTQ Community for the incredible support and grace they have shown my family and me.

“To this great city, my hometown, a sincere thank you. I truly regret what I said and I’m so very sorry. No one loves this town more than me.”

Brennaman, 57, confirmed his decision to The Post on Friday. The night of the incident, the Red announced Brennaman was suspended indefinitely pending an internal review. The following day, Fox Sports declared Brennaman would not be part of its NFL broadcasts for the 2020 season.

After a commercial break during the first game of a Reds-Royals doubleheader in August, Brennaman was caught saying, “One of the f-g capitals of the world.” Before the Reds pulled him from the booth during the second game, Brennaman apologized for his comment. He has since reached out to leading LGBTQ leaders in Cincinnati, among others, to better educate himself and work towards forgiveness.

“I have been in this profession that I love for 33 years,” his statement continued. “And if I’m given that opportunity, I will be a better broadcaster and a much better person.

“I am grateful for the forgiveness so many have extended to me, especially those in the LGBTQ community who I have met, spoken with and listened to almost daily over the last five weeks. With their continued guidance, I hope to be a voice for positive change.”
