“Sorry Twitter, it is not true,” Tsai tweeted Saturday of the rumor. “I grew up as a Mets fan and I have a lot of respect for Alex and Jennifer. But I’m not involved in bidding for the Mets. Gotta focus on basketball.”
Rodriguez — the former Yankees great and childhood Mets fan — and fiancée Jennifer Lopez have put together a star-studded bid for the Amazin’s that includes a host of high-profile sports figures including Super Bowl champion tight end Travis Kelce and former NFL running back DeMarco Murray, among others. Ironically, it’s the former Brooklyn Net Mason Plumlee, also involved in A-Rod’s bid, who put Tsai’s name out as a member of the group.
“Spoiler alert: we’ve now got another billionaire sports owner in the mix as a partner — Joe Tsai — who brings our collective net worth to the top of the bid list,” Plumlee recently wrote on his personal website.
Tsai’s net worth is indeed impressive, and growing even in 2020 when others have hemorrhaged money.
The 56-year-old is worth $13.2 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, up $183 million in the latest daily update and $1.07 billion year-to-date.
And last week it was reported the Alibaba executive vice chairman had reduced his stake in the company he co-founded from 2.2 percent to 1.6 percent.
The shares — offloaded amid an Alibaba price surge the past several months — were worth a cool $3.3 billion as of Friday.
It’s unclear how much if any of that influx of cash was used to close out his takeover of the Nets and Barclays Center from Mikhail Prokhorov, both moves first reported by The Post.
Either way, Tsai won’t be using any of it to buy into the Mets, which would be the third local team added to his portfolio.
A potential complication could have arisen should Tsai have joined A-Rod’s bid, as the Nets play on YES Network and the Mets play on the rival SNY.
“The Nets have a relationship with YES Network [Yankees] and that relationship is [their] priority,” a source said.
