Nearly 2,700 public proposals to replace Mississippi’s state flag have been released online — including some that feature beer cans, Elvis Presley and Kermit the Frog.

The nine-member Commission to Redesign the Mississippi State Flag will now each choose 25 of their favorite submissions by Friday, narrowing the potential field to a maximum of 225 entries, Mississippi Department of Archives and History spokesman Michael Morris said. In total, 2,693 total submissions were received by the MDAH, which posted the submissions on its website Monday.

The eventual replacement for the Confederate battle flag — which had been widely condemned as racist and was retired last month — cannot include the Confederate symbol and must feature the phrase “In God We Trust,” the MDAH said.

The commission will then have to rank its collective top ten choices before a meeting on Aug. 14, when five final designs will be approved and put on MDAH’s website for public comment, Morris said.

The commission then plans to make its final decision on Sept. 2 before it goes to voters statewide on the Nov. 3 ballot.

In addition to submissions featuring Presley — a nod to his birthplace, as well as that of Muppets creator Jim Henson — some of the proposed designs were drawn by children and many featured the magnolia blossom, the state’s official flower, the Clarion Ledger reports.

Others incorporated blue lines that may harken the Mississippi River, contained references to college football, or read “In Allah We trust,” the newspaper reports.
