Whether you’re looking to get back to work or to earn extra cash as a side hustle, now’s the time to pounce on part-time seasonal jobs.

According to ManpowerGroup’s new Employment Outlook Survey, employers across all sectors plan to increase their hiring in the fourth quarter. Online retail, in particular, is surging — up 44.5 percent since the second quarter of 2020.

Seasonal jobs also allow you to try a job on for size while earning a steady paycheck, gaining new skills, building contacts and, in some cases, enjoying paid company benefits.

Here are some local companies where you can earn extra cash for the holidays.

Walmart plans on hiring more than 20,000 seasonal associates in its e-commerce fulfillment centers nationwide. Roles ranging from order fillers to power-equipment operators start at an hourly rate of $15.75 up to $23.75. Hiring will continue through Jan. 1, 2021, and many workers will have the opportunity to become full-time employees. Associates in hourly roles can access some benefits on their first day, such as an associate stock-purchase plan and contributions to a 401(k).

UPS is hiring approximately 1,500 seasonal workers in New York City as drivers, driver helpers, package handlers and personal vehicle drivers. Wages range from $14.50 up to $30 an hour. For part-time seasonal jobs ending in late January, work consists of three to five hours daily for a five-day week. College students can earn up to $1,300 in tuition assistance if they work the three-month season.

Last year, approximately one-third of seasonal hires came back for permanent roles, which offer access to health care, pension contributions and paid time off. Part-time workers receive full health-care coverage after nine months.

Lowe’s plans on hiring more than 1,000 associates in and around NYC this holiday season, including cashiers, customer service associates, receivers, unloaders, load pullers and sales specialists. Historically, 50 percent of seasonal hires have been converted to permanent jobs. Seasonal workers get a 10 percent employee discount, health-and-wellness benefits, contributions to 401(k), tuition reimbursement and more within a few months of starting. Lowe’s also offers Track to the Trades, a company-funded certification program to help employees pursue careers in skilled building trades.

Retail opportunities are available for 15 to 25 hours a week. Seasonal workers should communicate interest in a full-time role since positions may become permanent. Seasonal part-time employees are eligible for the company wellness program and an “employee first fund” which provides grants to workers experiencing unforeseen emergencies, and merchandise discounts.

FedEx plans on adding more than 2,280 local positions this holiday season and expects many to become permanent. After a minimum threshold of service (dependent upon the number of days worked), package handlers are eligible for full benefits, paid time off and tuition reimbursement.

Amazon has 1,800 local seasonal roles open, for 20 hours each week or less. Starting wages range from $17.75 to $23 an hour in jobs involving stowing, picking, packing, shipping and delivering orders to managers, safety, operating robotics and more. More than 35,000 part-timers were promoted to full time this year. Benefits, including vision, dental, life insurance and funding toward health insurance kick in immediately.

CVS Health has 200 jobs open in NYC, the majority for pharmacy technicians (both full and part-time roles), along with sales associates.

Jeff Lackey, vice president of talent acquisition, said, “For people interested in making a career change, a pharmacy tech role is a great place to start. You can do this without getting a full four-year degree. Just get your licensure and explore this new line of work.” (Licensing requirements differ by state and are not required for New York.)

After 90 days, part-time workers are eligible for dental and vision coverage, and other voluntary benefits. After 12 months, part-time workers can earn medical coverage if they’ve worked 30 hours per week or more the previous year. All workers are eligible for 20 to 30 percent off product discounts.

Each store and distribution center in the tri-state area will be hiring seasonal team members.

The starting wage is $15 an hour and repeat work is a possibility. Nearly 40 percent of seasonal hires remain after the holiday season. Part-time workers have access to health care through virtual physicians and access to a free resource for things like managing money and finding child care. T

hen there are the perks: a 10 percent discount at Target stores and online and an additional 20 percent merchandise-wellness discount for health products.

Starbucks employees who work at least 20 hours a week are eligible for health insurance, a tuition-free college degree program, paid family sick time and more. Hourly workers also have access to 20 free sessions a year with a mental health therapist or coach through Lyra Health. Employees get a free pound of coffee or a box of tea every week, plus a 30 percent discount.

Marissa Andrada, chief diversity, inclusion and people officer, said that “while an employee may start with Chipotle as a ‘holiday job’ our hope is that they will find value in being a part of our organization and stay to grow with us.”

Part-time crew members have access to a 401(k) and a preventative medical plan after the first month, and a full medical plan and 401(k) company match after a year. Hourly crew members are also eligible to access a college education by working four months for at least 15 hours each week, with tuition costs paid for 75 different degrees across six universities.
