San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan caused an uproar a week ago when he complained about the quality of the new MetLife Stadium playing surface after his team was ravaged by injuries, including two ACL tears, during a rout of the Jets.
After spending the time in between practicing in West Virginia instead of crossing the country twice more, the 49ers returned Sunday and left without a fuss despite losing tight end Jordan Reed (ankle), cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (concussion), linebacker Mark Nzeocha (quad) and running back Jerick McKinnon (ribs) during a 36-9 whupping of the Giants.
The NFL sent turf inspectors to East Rutherford during the week to make sure it was up to standards.
It was surprising Shanahan didn’t readdress the issue. But was he surprised by his depleted team’s thorough domination of the Giants?
“No, and it’s nothing against them at all, but we had a real good week of practice,” Shanahan said. “We were pretty confident [Saturday] night. I know the way it ended up, but by no means was that easy. It got away a little bit there at the end, but I was really proud of our guys. That was our plan. We came in and wanted to do that. We thought we could do it, and I was proud of the guys for pulling it off.”
Giants coach Joe Judge spent nearly 45 minutes in the locker room to “check on some guys and see how they are doing,” but had no updates on injured left tackle Andrew Thomas and safety Jabrill Peppers.
Peppers injured an ankle on field-goal defense in the first quarter and did not return, while Thomas missed only a couple of snaps late in the fourth quarter, allowing fellow rookie Matt Peart to debut at left tackle.
