Since February, Ukraine has been engaged in a defensive war against invader Russia. Now, anime symbolism is finding its way into the war as well.

On September 30, 2022, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported in an infographic on Twitter about the losses that the Ukrainian army inflicted on the enemy occupier Russia. The tweet begins with a quote from Monkey D. Luffy from the anime series “One Piece”: “Power isn’t determined by your size, but the size of your heart and dreams!”

This is not the first time that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has used anime references in its communications. A reference to the brand new anime «Chainsaw Man» was made in July. It was about the so-called HIMARS missiles, which were newly deployed on the Ukraine front. In a Chainsaw Man-style graphic, the rockets were integrated into a body: “Today #HIMARS has a Ukrainian heart beating inside of it. Today #HIMARS wears Ukrainian military uniform.”
