#The Wendy Williams Show Ends This Week After 13 Years

“The Wendy Williams Show Ends This Week After 13 Years”

After a 13-year run, The Wendy Williams Show comes to an end this week. As reported by Deadline, the very last episode of the long-running daytime talk show will air on Friday, June 17. Wendy Williams will not personally be present, as she has been sitting out this season due to health issues, though interim host Sherri Shepherd will be sending off Williams with a special tribute video.

“The final original episode of The Wendy Williams Show will air on Friday, June 17th, with a video tribute to the iconic host. The series comes to an end after 13 successful years in syndication,” a spokesperson for the series said.

The Wendy Williams Show, also referred to as Wendy, originally debuted in 2008. For many years, it had served as direct competition to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which also just recently wrapped up its own run after 19 seasons. The future of Wendy was in jeopardy after Williams took a leave of absence from the talk show last year because of her medical issues. In February, it was reported that a new talk show featuring Sherri Shepherd would take over the time slot for The Wendy Williams Show in the 2022-23 season.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We all have a great love and affinity for Wendy, who grew into a true icon during her 12 incredible seasons as the solo host of a live, daily talk show dishing on ‘Hot Topics’ and interviewing celebrities,” a statement from Debar-Mercury said when the news was announced. “Since Wendy is still not available to host the show as she continues on her road to recovery, we believe it is best for our fans, stations and advertising partners to start making this transition now. We hope to be able to work with Wendy again in the future, and continue to wish her a speedy and full recovery.”

Wendy Williams Is Far From Finished

Wendy Williams had also released her own statement explaining that she understands the business decision in shutting down The Wendy Williams Show. She also wished Shepherd well and noted that she was “incredibly grateful” to have had 13 years with the series and all of the experiences that it brought. With that said, she is leaving the door open for a television return at some point in the future after first focusing on becoming healthier.

“It’s been a challenging time for Wendy as she deals with her health issues. She is incredibly grateful to Debmar-Mercury, to Sherri and everybody else who has supported the show through this time,” read a statement from Howard Bragman, Williams’ spokesperson. “She, more than anyone, understands the reality of syndicated television — you can’t go to the marketplace and sell a show that’s The Maybe Wendy Show. She understands why this decision was made from a business point of view, and she has been assured by Debmar-Mercury that should her health get to a point where she can host again and should her desire be that she hosts again that she would be back on TV at that time.”
