The Talk may be coming to an end. CBS is currently developing a new daytime soap called The Gates, and the network’s possible timeslots are limited.
The new series, from Michele Val Jean, will follow the lives of a wealthy Black family. Val Jean is no stranger to daytime, having written over 2,000 hours of daytime dramas and won multiple Emmy awards.
The Young and the Restless is the top-rated show in daytime and was recently renewed for four more years. The Bold and the Beautiful also performs well and has reportedly been renewed through 2025. Game shows Let’s Make a Deal and The Price Is Right are also solid performers and are relatively inexpensive to produce. The network airs primetime specials of both programs on an ongoing basis.
So, that leaves The Talk’s timeslot. The show is CBS’ lowest-rated daytime show, currently in its 14th season, and has not yet been renewed for season 15. Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Natalie Morales, and Sheryl Underwood are the series’ current hosts.
The program has undergone some behind-the-scenes changes this season. Deadline reports that Rob Crabbe took over the series from longtime EP Kristin Matthews. He has made some changes to the show’s format, adding more intimate interviews and extending the opening, but the series is still the lowest-performing of the CBS daytime lineup. As part of company layoffs, Laurie Seidman, SVP at CBS Entertainment with overview of The Talk, and one of the show’s public relations representatives were both reportedly let go.
What do you think? Do you enjoy watching The Talk? Are you hoping the show survives, or would you like to see another soap opera in daytime?
