#Hell’s Paradise Episode 3: Gabimaru and Sagiri clash, the real nature of Shinsenkyo is revealed

Hell’s Paradise Episode 3, titled Weakness and Strength, showed the chosen convicts finally setting foot upon the fabled island. As the characters ventured deeper into the forest, the true nature of this expedition became evident to Gabimaru and Sagiri. While the previous two episodes introduced the protagonist Gabimaru and set the scene for the story, the latest episode of the anime revealed the other Yamada Asaemons’ attitude towards the criminals.

Sagiri proved to be an anomaly due to her extreme rigidity, while Gabimaru’s moral ambiguity made him a dangerous and vicious enemy. This article reviews the major highlights of Hell’s Paradise Episode 3, and discusses how these events contribute to the plot of the series.

Hell’s Paradise Episode 3 shows the violent nature of the search for the Elixir as the convicts land ashore

Gabimaru’s perception and skill

Hell’s Paradise Episode 3 began with Gabimaru narrating the story of the Iwagakure village chief’s immortality, assuring Sagiri that the Elixir of Life, or “Tokujiku no Kagunomi,” was indeed real, although he was unsure if it truly existed on the island. Sagiri was entranced by the profusion of flowers and trees, likening the forest to paradise.

But Gabimaru was more perceptive, commenting that the place seemed unnatural and creepy due to how plants belonging to different natural habitats were growing there with no rhyme or reason. Episode 3 showcased the true extent of Gabimaru the Hollow’s terrifying potential when he was suddenly attacked by Twisted Keiun.

Gabimaru nonchalantly fixed his dislocated neck and tied his hands together upon Sagiri’s orders while the other convict continued to smash weapon after weapon on the ninja assassin’s back. He managed to fight and kill the bloodthirsty convict with his hands tied, despite the latter being several times larger in stature and wielding an entire box full of weapons.

Episode 3 of the Hell’s Paradise anime showed Gabimaru casually ripping apart the rope tying his hands as he anticipated trouble ahead. Sagiri immediately objected, insisting that they had to follow the Shogun’s orders regardless of how ridiculous the rules might be. Gabimaru complained that they had only been three days’ worth of food, exclaiming that it was almost as though they expected the convicts to fail.

Sagiri simply threatened to behead him if he refused to follow orders, reminding Gabimaru that she was not his ally. The ninja pointed out that Twisted Keiun’s hands were unbound, flustering the Yamada Asaemon. Keiun’s escort, Kisho, remarked that Sagiri was too uptight and by the book, insinuating that to be the reason why she still remained the lowest ranking Asaemon. He also relayed the rumor that this mission would determine the next head of the Yamada clan.

Kisho added that Sagiri needed to learn to prioritize what was most important in a desperate situation, since the Shogunate would rather have results than have them fail by getting stuck on a technicality. Despite her colleague’s words, however, the Yamada Asaemon insisted that Gabimaru bind his hands as per the issued orders.

Gabimaru and Sagiri’s inner struggles

Hell’s Paradise Episode 3 showed Kisho beheading the dead convict he had been in charge of, before beginning to leave. Kisho warned the duo that the convicts were dispensable, and the situation was going to change drastically in a few hours.

Kisho further revealed that the Shogunate had plans to contact the Iwagakure ninjas to take over the search. This triggered Gabimaru in the worst way possible, leading him to once more fall back upon his assassin tendencies. He explained that Sagiri would be a liability slowing him down, and that he would likely never see his wife again if the Iwagakure ninjas were dispatched to the island.

As the two fought, Gabimaru took stock of how feeling human emotions had given him both strength as well as weakness. Both the executioner and the convict continued to fight, but hesitated to strike the killing blow. As Gabimaru overpowered Sagiri and continued to suffer from two conflicting ideologies at war within him, the latter recognized the anguish the ninja felt while killing another person.

Having suffered from the same sort of fear, Sagiri pacified Gabimaru and stated that rejecting one’s emotions was the same as averting one’s eyes. She added that facing his emotions was what constituted true strength, and insisted that Gabimaru was no longer the same man as he had once been.

The true nature of Shinsenkyo

Hell’s Paradise Episode 3 moved on to show the other convicts’ whereabouts, revealing the true nature of the forest. Several convicts had already begun killing off each other, and their Asaemon escorts, including the giant Rokurota who killed Eizen soon after landing on the island. The “Cannibal Courtesan” Akaginu attempted to seduce her assigned Yamada Asaemon, Shion, but was beheaded by the blind executioner.

Tamiya Gantetsusai and his escort encountered several unnatural creatures, including butterflies with human faces, and centipedes with human fingers replacing their tongues. One of the butterflies bit Gantetsusai’s hand, prompting the swordsman to immediately cut it off. The shocked Asaemon asked why he did that, but soon found his answer as the infected hand shriveled up into a tree branch with flowers sprouting from it.

The flurry of butterflies was accompanied by a giant humanoid figure with a long tongue, and child-like arms protruding out of its eye sockets. Hell’s Paradise Episode 3 ended with Gabimaru and Sagiri stuck in a similar situation, as swarms of butterflies, centipedes, and a humanoid figure with the head of a fish, six arms folded in prayer, and four spiky rope-like appendages, confronted them.

Final thoughts

Hell’s Paradise Episode 3 introduced the true nature of Shinsenkyo, and gave viewers the first taste of the horrors that await the convicts and Asaemons. Gabimaru and Sagiri’s confrontation provided fans with more insight into their psyche, revealing how the two bond over their individual fears and inspire each other to conquer their weaknesses. The monsters showcased towards the end of the episode suggest that Hell’s Paradise Episode 4 will likely show the convicts fighting against the otherworldly creatures of the island.
