#The Post endorses Tali Farhadian Weinstein for Manhattan DA

A city facing rising violent crime can’t afford to elect as its most important prosecutor someone who brags about how little energy he’ll put into jailing and imprisoning bad guys. Yet that accounts for most of the eight Democrats looking to become the next Manhattan district attorney.

Dan Quart, Alvin Bragg, Eliza Orlins, Tahanie Aboushi and Lucy Lang not only want to continue emptying New York’s prisons, most of them lack any real prosecutorial experience — guaranteeing utter chaos and confusion should any get the job.

Bragg, the leader of this bunch, even brags about how he’s only ever prosecuted a single misdemeanor in his entire career (a case against anti-abortion protesters). Yet 80 percent of the Manhattan DA’s cases are misdemeanors, many of them serious crimes touching on gun violence and other major disorder, as well as outrages such as wage theft. (Heck, much white-collar crime counts as misdemeanors.)

That makes the choice of Tali Farhadian Weinstein all the more clear, as she consistently, credibly promises to put public safety first.

Farhadian Weinstein also stands head and shoulders above all seven other candidates when it comes to experience and other qualifications: Out of Yale Law, she clerked for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and DC Circuit Judge Merrick Garland (now the US attorney general). She’s been both a federal prosecutor (as well as gaining major managerial experience in the Obama Justice Department) and a local one, under Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez. She’s put people away for everything from gun crime and murder to tax fraud and public corruption.

That experience matters, because this is a huge, tough job: The Manhattan DA is one of the most important prosecutors in the entire country, indeed the world: With jurisdiction over Wall Street, he or she needs to handle cases involving international finance (as in the 1980s BCCI case). That’s on top of plenty of other white-collar cases — as well as the usual raft of murders, thefts, rapes and so on that are the main focus of most DAs around the country.

We have our disagreements even with Farhadian Weinstein and the other two anti-crime candidates, but Democrats utterly dominate Manhattan elections, so the general election is a mere formality. The party’s primary is the real contest — and the crazy left could easily determine the winner. The Post endorses Tali Farhadian Weinstein as the clear best choice for all sane New Yorkers.
