#The Margin: Wegmans recalls cat grass, microgreens and sweet-pea leaves over salmonella concerns

“The Margin: Wegmans recalls cat grass, microgreens and sweet-pea leaves over salmonella concerns”

The retailer warned that greens sold in seven states could be contaminated. Here’s how to get a refund.

Here’s a reason not to eat your greens.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., issued a voluntary recall over Christmas weekend for its products containing microgreens, sweet-pea leaves and cat grass, which could be contaminated with salmonella. Some of the soil that those products were grown in tested positive for salmonella by the supplier.

The affected greens were sold at Wegmans stores in seven states: New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

The recalled products are:

  • Wegmans Organic Farm & Orchard Micro Greens, 1.75 ounces, UPC 77890-25036, with use-by dates 12/17/22 and 12/24/22

  • Wegmans Organic Baby Kale & Baby Spinach with Sweet Pea Leaves, 5 ounces, UPC 77890-52377, with use-by date 12/20/22

  • Wegmans Organic Farm & Orchard Cat Grass, UPC 77890-50938, sold since Oct. 25, 2022

Customers should return these products to the service desk at a Wegmans store for a full refund, Wegmans said. The retailer is also placing automated phone calls to shoppers who purchased the products using a Wegmans Shoppers Club card.

No illnesses have been associated with this recall yet, and Wegmans said it was pulling the products out of “an abundance of caution.” Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older people and those with weakened immune systems. Most people infected with salmonella experience diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the United States every year. Those infections are mostly contracted through food.
