“The Margin: The Salesforce Tower climber has been identified as an anti-abortion protester calling himself ‘Pro Life Spiderman’”

The climber was detained by San Francisco police after reaching the top of the city’s tallest tower on Tuesday

The man who climbed the 61-floor Salesforce Tower in San Francisco on Tuesday without any ropes has been detained by police after reaching the top.

The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that the individual who captured Twitter’s attention on Tuesday was met by the San Francisco Police Department after reaching the top of the 1,070-foot-tall building at 415 Mission St. at around 10:50 a.m. local time.

Local news footage shows the moment when the climber, who some outlets have identified as an anti-abortion activist, was met by authorities at the top of San Francisco’s tallest tower.

The police told the local NBC affiliate that citizens waved down police officers at around 9:21 a.m. local time to report that someone was climbing the Salesforce tower.

Local news outlets including the San Francisco Standard and SFGate reported that the climber appeared to be an anti-abortion activist going by Maison Des Champs on Instagram, who has also dubbed himself the “pro life Spiderman.” He identifies himself on his website as a rock climber who recently started scaling skyscrapers to end abortion. His goal is to raise $1 million for “pro-life charities” and to put a Washington, D.C.-based doctor in jail.

He also appeared to be posting on Instagram during his climb. “It’s all going good,” he said, mid-ascent. “I just wish I had a little water.”

The stunt, which the San Francisco Fire Department said put firefighters’ lives and public safety at risk, came the day after Politico leaked a now-authenticated draft majority opinion of a pending Supreme Court decision to strike down the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

And the climb managed to break through Twitter’s trending topics in the U.S. on Tuesday, which had been mostly dominated by Roe v. Wade-related terms and topics throughout the day. Spectators and news organizations shared footage of the dangerous climb, which quickly made the rounds on social media. Here’s a few.

While some watching the story unfold on Twitter were initially cheering him on, reports that he may have been an anti-abortion activist left some of them conflicted.
