“The Margin: Skippy recalls over 160K pounds of peanut butter possibly containing steel fragments”

The Hormel Foods brand is voluntarily recalling more than 9,000 cases of peanut butter across 18 states that may have been contaminated by manufacturing equipment

Start spreading the news: Skippy customers should double-check their jars before they make another PB&J.

That’s because Skippy is voluntarily recalling 9,353 cases of peanut butter — or 161,692 total pounds, which some reports equate to 60,000 jars — due to the possibility that some jars may contain a small fragment of stainless steel from a piece of manufacturing equipment.

The Hormel Foods

brand announced the Skippy recall on Wednesday, which began trending on Google on Thursday as news of the recall spread.

The flavors that could be contaminated include “a very limited number” of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread,  Skippy Reduced Fat Chunky Peanut Butter Spread and  Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter Blended With Plant Protein, the company said. The potentially affected products were shipped to 18 states, including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Check your jars for the following “best if used by” dates, which will be printed on the top of the lid:

Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter, 40 ounces: Best if Used By MAY0423, and Best if Used By MAY0523

Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter – Club, 2/40 ounces: Best if Used By MAY0523

Skippy Reduced Fat Chunky Peanut Butter, 16.3 ounces: Best if Used By MAY0623, and Best if Used By MAY0723

Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter Blended With Plant Protein, 14 ounces: Best if Used By MAY1023

If you have one of these jars, Skippy advises bringing it back to where you bought it for an exchange. You can also call Skippy Foods Consumer Engagement at 1-866-475-4779 or visit the website at www.peanutbutter.com for more instructions and information.

The company added that no other sizes, varieties or packaging configurations of Skippy peanut butter or peanut butter spreads are included in the recall, and emphasized that there have been no reports of consumer complaints associated with this recall to date. The manufacturing facility’s internal detection systems are what identified the concern.

Hormel also recalled 153 cases, or 1,871 total pounds, of a single code date of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread in 2015 over similar concerns that some jars may have contained small pieces of metal shavings.
