Hong Kong authorities have arrested thousands of peaceful protesters, raided newspaper offices and fired pro-democracy academics, yet still hit a new low over the weekend: taking down a 12-year-old girl.

Video shows baton-wielding cops pushing protesters into a corner in a shopping area — and treating the schoolgirl, whose mom says she was out shopping for art supplies, as part of the crowd. As she tries to get away, one officer tackles her and others rush in to help keep her down. (Afterward, they ticketed her for a social-distancing violation.)

Symbolic enough of how Beijing is bullying the citizens of the once-free city, hundreds of them were arrested Sunday for “unlawful assembly” — protesting the government goons’ postponement of legislative elections for a full year in the largest demonstrations since China imposed its dissent-is-criminal “national security” law July 1.

The girl was bruised and scratched by police; her mother says she plans to file a complaint and sue. The police, unapologetic, vowed “zero tolerance” for any violations.

This is Xi Jinping’s China: Even innocent bystanders are at risk as officials rush to crush any semblance of resistance in a city that China promised would retain its freedoms until 2047.
