“#Adam Gase clears the air on unusual Jets play-calling setup”
Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains has called the plays for the past four games and continued to Sunday. Gase said Loggains would tell him the play and he was relaying the plays into quarterback Joe Flacco. That was why it appeared he was calling the plays when the CBS cameras showed him.
“I’ve been sending them in the last three weeks,” Gase said. “I help on some of the third-down stuff and the two-minute stuff. It’s easier when I get involved in the two-minute stuff to already have the communication just because it goes quicker.”
It might seem like that is over-complicating things, but Gase said it helps the communication and he has veto power over plays.
“I get involved in some stuff, in two-minute situations,” Gase said. “It’s not that hard. He says, ‘Play 25,’ and I read it off.”
Jets kicker Sam Ficken returned after missing three games with a groin injury, and it did not go well. Ficken missed two extra points, including on the Jets’ first touchdown when they had some momentum.
“I was a little surprised that he missed those,” Gase said. “He looked fine in practice. We went through all the evaluations that we thought we should go through. We felt like that’s who we were going to if he was healthy.”
Ficken had missed just one field goal before the injury, and Sergio Castillo kicked very well in Ficken’s absence. Castillo is still on the Jets roster so the team can make a decision whether it wants to cut Ficken after Sunday’s performance.
The Jets had no answers for Chargers star receiver Keenan Allen, who had fun against the Jets young secondary. Allen had 16 catches for 145 yards and one touchdown. The 16 receptions are the most ever by a Jets opponent, beating the record of 15 set by Wes Welker on Nov. 22, 2009, when he was with the Patriots, according to Pro Football Reference.
The Jets pushed their league-leading roughing-the-passer penalties total to 12 with two more. Nathan Shepherd committed one of the dumbest penalties you’ll ever see when he hit Chargers QB Justin Herbert after he slid. Jordan Jenkins later committed a roughing-the-passer penalty to bring the season total to 12.
RT George Fant (ankle), RT Chuma Edoga (ankle) and RB La’Mical Perine (ankle) all left the game and did not return. Gase said the Fant injury is the one the Jets fear is serious. … The Jets inactives were: QB Sam Darnold, QB James Morgan, OL Cameron Clark, LB Blake Cashman and Castillo.
