#Michigan woman charged in 2003 murders of twin newborn sons

A Michigan woman has been charged with murdering her twin newborn sons — a crime that occurred 17 years ago — thanks to modern DNA testing, authorities said Saturday.

Antoinette Briley, 41, was arrested in Oak Lawn, Ill., on Friday, and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, Cook County police said.

Until now, authorities had no clue who had killed the babies. Their bodies were discovered on June 6, 2003, by a waste management worker who was emptying trash bins into the front lift bucket of her garbage truck in Stickney Township, Ill.

An autopsy revealed the boys were born alive and had died from asphyxiation.

Investigators managed to identify Briley, of Holland, Mich., as the boys’ birth mother through DNA evidence collected at the scene and the latest developments in genetic testing.
