2021’s The Detective Is Already Dead TV anime series is set to receive a sequel. The production of the second season was announced during the MF Bunko J Summer School Festival 2022 livestream.

An announcement trailer and visual have also been released. The latter features the tagline, “It’s too early for an epilogue.”

The first season was directed by Manabu Kurihara (Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out character designer) with Shinichi Fukumoto (Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs co-director) as assistant director, Deko Akao (When Will Ayumu Make His Move?) as series composer, and Yousuke Itou (Hensuki: Are You Willing To Fall In Love With A Pervert, As Long As She’s A Cutie?) as character designer. ENGI produced the show. 

The Detective Is Already Dead is based on the light novel series written by Nigojuu and illustrated by Umibouzu. The Kadokawa-published series began in 2019 and won the 15th MF Bunko J Light Novel Rookie of the Year award that year. It will release its seventh volume in August 25. 

Yen Press describes the story as:

Kimitsuka Kimihiko was the assistant to a beautiful detective named Siesta — until Siesta died, anyway. Now, Kimitsuka has encountered a girl who bears an uncanny resemblance to his former boss…

A manga adaptation by Mugiko began in late 2020, while a manga spin-off by Poni titled The Detective Is Already Dead -the lost memory- began in 2021. 2021 also saw the start of another manga spin-off titled To Aru Tantei to Joshu no Rabukometeki Nichijou @Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru (A Certain Detective and Her Assistant’s Romantic Comedy-like Everyday @The Detective Is Already Dead) from Moyashi Ime, which is serialized on Twitter. Illustrations from Mugiko, Poni, and Ime to celebrate The Detective Is Already Dead‘s second season announcement were released.
