The Bear’s Matty Matheson serves debut single with hardcore band Pig Pen

Pig Pen, a hardcore band formed by Matty Matheson of The Bear, have dropped their debut single. The mosh-pit ready “Mental Mentality” will feature on the band’s upcoming debut album, titled Mental Madness, which is set for release this summer. Scroll down to listen to the track now.
Matheson, who fronts Pig Pen, screams “I have the mental madness. I’m sick. I’m sick. I’m sick” on a track that sounds both raw and yet arrives with a big old studio shine, mixing beatdown rhythms with thrashier elements. He is backed by guitarists Wade MacNeil (Alexisonfire, Dooms Children) and Daniel Romano, plus drummer Ian Romano and bassist Tommy Major.
Mental Madness will be released on June 27 via Flatspot Records, home to some of the hardcore scene’s biggest new bands including Speed, Scowl, and End It. Press materials note that the album was created over two days in 2022: one day of writing and another in the studio.
In a statement, Matheson described the album as exploring “mental health shit” and “letting your mind destroy you.” “You can be having a beautiful day, surrounded by friends,” Matheson said, “and your brain can continuously ruin it. No matter how good or bad your life is, you can still
hate yourself. I’ve got to ask myself why am I feeling the ways I’m feeling?”
Pig Pen announced their arrival last month when they played a sold-out show at Toronto venue Sneaky Dee’s.
