The Riddler leaves behind a clue for Batman in a most peculiar way in a new clip from The Batman. Recently, a clip had surfaced from the film of the Riddler terrorizing a funeral in progress with Bruce Wayne in attendance. Director Matt Reeves said on Twitter how many people had seen the scene “floating around” online, so now it’s been made available in an official capacity at the highest quality possible. You can watch the scene below.

This mysterious incarnation of the Riddler seems to know exactly who Batman really is behind the mask. His silhouette can be seen peering down from above, looking directly at Bruce when the planned funeral-crashing takes place. It seems like he knows the person Batman really is would be there front and center to get his next clue courtesy of the Riddler.

The Batman Meets His Match With The Riddler

This film skips the traditional origin story of Batman, fast-forwarding past the deaths of the Waynes and the process that actually sees him transform into the Dark Knight. He is however still pretty early into his new life as a masked vigilante who fights crime in the streets of Gotham City at night. The superhero faces his biggest challenge yet with the Riddler, a masked maniac who terrorizes the city with his murders. But Bruce himself is also a tortured soul who takes some sort of enjoyment from inflicting pain, according to Pattinson.

“There is this rule with Batman: he must not kill. It can be interpreted in two ways. Either he only wants to inflict the appropriate punishment, or he wants to kill and his self-control prevents him from doing so,” Pattinson said, per Parade.

“I told myself that if he spends his nights chasing criminals, it is impossible that he does not take pleasure in it,” the Bruce Wayne actor went on to add. “He suffers and it is a desire that overwhelms him. And by dint of knocking, his mind clears, he calms down, he reaches a state close to plenitude.”

This also looks to be setting up for a new movie series that will bring more DC characters into the fray. There are early plans already for at least two spinoff shows to stream on HBO Max which tie directly into The Batman, one of them following the GCPD with the other focusing on Farrell’s Penguin. There is a lot of excitement surrounding this film’s release so chances are it will be a hit at the box office, likely giving the potential sequels the go-ahead.

The Batman is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on March 4, 2022.
