# The 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV is shaping up to be a good choice among compact electric SUVs

Fuel economy

Chevy estimates that the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV will have a range of 250 miles. As of this writing, the EPA has not confirmed a range or MPGe rating for the 2020 Bolt EV. A 250-mile range would be about on-par with other electric variants of crossovers like the Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona.

The Bolt EUV is powered by a single electric motor mated to a 65 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It makes a total output of 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. For charging time, GM estimates that with a 120-volt outlet, it can charge at a rate of about 4 miles of range per hour. With a 240-volt connection, that increases to a full charge in about seven hours. With DC fast charging, you get up to 95 miles worth of range in 30 minutes.

Standard features and options

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is available in three trims; LT, Premier, and Launch Edition. Unfortunately, all-wheel drive is not an option on any of them.

Standard features on the base LT ($33,995) model include the Chevy Safety Assist suite of driver assistance technologies, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning, following distance indicator, IntelliBeam, and front pedestrian braking. Also included with every 2022 Bolt EUV is a new dual-level charging cord. It can be used in a standard 120-volt outlet, and it can convert to a 240-volt outlet for level 2 charging without requiring a second cord.

We know that there are two other trims for the Bolt EUV — Premier ($38,495) and Launch Edition ($43,495) — but as of this writing, we do not have many specifics on which features come standard at those trim levels and which ones are optional. What we do know is that the Launch Edition will include the Super Cruise hands-free semi-autonomous driving system, a panoramic power sunroof, unique wheels, special badging, and an illuminated charge port.

Some of the available features include additional safety tech like adaptive cruise control and a surround-vision camera plus navigation, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. We’ll update this review when we know which features come on which trims.

Safety

As of this writing, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA nor the IIHS.

Every Bolt EUV comes standard with Chevy Safety Assist, which includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning, following distance indicator, IntelliBeam, and front pedestrian braking. Additional available safety tech on top of that includes adaptive cruise control, an HD Surround Vision camera, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Behind the wheel

The powertrain of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV is essentially the same as the outgoing Bolt EV, which is not a bad thing. Acceleration is peppy, and range is good. It’s even quicker when you hit the Sport mode button, making the front tires squeal when you floor it. However, most Bolt EUV drivers will be more concerned with range and comfort, which are both strong suits of this little crossover.

The redesigned interior is a big improvement over the outgoing Bolt EV. It’s more roomy and airy, partially thanks to the nicely laid-out push-button shifter. The seats are comfortable, and there’s pretty good room in the adult-friendly back seats.

Chevy tunes the Bolt EUV’s suspension for comfort (don’t expect to do much off-roading). The result is a smoother, quieter, and more refined ride than we’re used to in the old Bolt while delivering the same lively performance. The one-pedal drive system works nicely in both city and highway driving, enabling you to never touch the brake pedal unless there’s an emergency.

Speaking of safety, the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system works like a charm in the Bolt EUV. It does a nice job maintaining speed and a safe distance with the car in front of you on the highway, which is the easy part. What’s more impressive is how smoothly it slows down when there’s an abrupt interruption in traffic flow. You’ll sometimes notice small steering corrections that are a bit too frequent in an effort to keep the car centered in its lane, but that’s a slight irritation compared to the benefits of Super Cruise.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV — An all-new 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV hatchback has been unveiled alongside the all-new Bolt EUV. The Bolt EV is a little more affordable and has a slightly longer range, but has fewer standard features like wireless device charging and the dual-level charging cord.

2022 Hyundai Kona EV — The Hyundai

Kona EV squeezes out a little more range than the Bolt EUV at 258 miles. The Kona EV has a lot going for it, but its starting price is a little higher than the Chevy, and it’s only available in 10 states.

2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime — The Toyota

RAV4 Prime is a highly compelling plug-in hybrid compact SUV. It has an impressive all-electric range of 42 miles, a 94 MPGe rating, and a starting price similar to a mid-range Bolt EUV. You also get standard AWD.

2022 Lexus UX Hybrid — It’s a conventional hybrid rather than an EV, but the Lexus UX Hybrid is an efficient small luxury crossover in a similar price territory as the Bolt EUV. This Lexus benefits from standard AWD, a premium, high-tech interior, and no range anxiety.

Used Lexus NX Hybrid — There are virtually no all-electric luxury SUVs on the used market with pricing similar to a new Bolt EUV. However, there are plenty of used luxury hybrid crossovers like the Lexus NX Hybrid, which is stylish, efficient, and has low ownership costs.

Autotrader’s advice

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV looks to be a compelling choice in the burgeoning segment of compact electric SUVs. If you’re looking for an electric SUV with thrilling performance or amazing off-road capabilities, you’ll have to look elsewhere and have a bigger budget. The all-new Bolt EUV helps to fill a gap in EVs as a small, affordable, all-electric crossover with a decent range, modern tech, and 50-state availability. As long as you like the styling, what’s not to like?
