Tesla’s popular Sentry mode, a feature that uses the car’s autopilot cameras as a security system to prevent theft or vandalism, just received a big upgrade. A new software update allows owners to remotely watch a live view from the Sentry cameras on their iPhones.

According to Electrek, Tesla’s “Sentry Mode Live Camera Access” feature is rolling out in the 2021.36.8 software update. Unfortunately, it appears to only work on the iOS app right now, and we’re not sure when Android devices will receive support.

The automaker had this to say about its latest feature:

“You can now remotely view your car’s surroundings when parked to confirm the safety of your environment before returning to your car. Live Camera is end-to-end encrypted and cannot be accessed by Tesla. To enable or disable tap Controls > Safety & Security.”

Until today, Sentry Mode only recorded footage to a local storage device inside the vehicle, and only when an event triggered the system, like theft. Now, users will be able to fire up the iPhone app, launch live view, and see a full video feed of the vehicle’s surroundings, whether that’s while leaving work or parked in the driveway at night.

As you can see from the tweet above, Tesla vehicles get better over time. As a bonus, Elon Musk confirmed that this new “Sentry Mode Live Camera Access” even allows users to take over the vehicle’s speakers and talk to passengers inside, or even better, yell at an intruder.

It’s worth stating that this new feature is only available for Tesla owners with a “Premium Connectivity” subscription, which costs $10 a month. That said, most users likely already have a subscription to the service thanks to free trials or because the package also offers in-car music and media streaming, a web browser, and satellite-view maps with live traffic stats.

If you didn’t subscribe to the Tesla Premium Connectivity package, now would be a good time to give it a try and enjoy this new safety and security feature.
