#The First Slam Dunk To Return to Theaters in Japan

The First Slam Dunk is returning to Japanese theaters on August 13 this year.

Comic Natalie reports that the sports anime film, which is currently the 13th highest-grossing movie in Japan, will screen in more than 300 locations for its rerun. Additionally, Netflix Japan will begin streaming the show on June 10.

The First Slam Dunk premiered in Japan on December 3, 2022 and made 15.73 billion yen (~US$100.26 million). The film depicts the match between Shohoku and Sannoh, with Shohoku’s Point Guard Ryota Miyagi as the main protagonist. 3DCG was used for the basketball scenes.

Slam Dunk mangaka Takehiko Inoue directed the movie, which was co-produced by Toei Animation and CG company Dandelion Animation Studio. It won Best Animated Work at the 46th Japan Academy Film Prize in addition to other awards.

The Slam Dunk manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1996 and collected into 31 tankoubon volumes. In 2005, Takehiko drew an epilogue called Slam Dunk 10 Days Later on school blackboards. The epilogue was reprinted in 2009.

The First Slam Dunk is the first Slam Dunk anime since the 90s, which saw a 101 episode TV anime series and four anime films. It had its North American premiere at Anime Expo 2023 and started screening in North American theaters on July 28, 2023. GKIDS announced last month that it will release a Blu-ray disc of the movie on June 25, 2024.
