Keiko Nobumoto, the series composer of the Cowboy Bebop anime series and one of its scriptwriters, has passed away from esophageal cancer. She was 57.
Nobumoto’s passing was revealed by fellow anime writer Dai Sato, who wrote some of Cowboy Bebop‘s episodes and provided setting design assistance for the show. In a Facebook post, Sato wrote that Nobumoto had passed away on December 1 and that a funeral was held on December 4. In accordance with Nobumoto’s wishes, only family members attended the funeral.
Nobumoto was born on March 13, 1964 in Hokkaido. Aside from Cowboy Bebop and its 2001 movie, she served as series composer or scriptwriter on anime like Macross Plus, Tokyo Godfathers, Wolf’s Rain (which Nobumoto also co-created with Bones), Space Dandy, and Carole and Tuesday. Nobumoto also wrote for live-action shows like 1990’s Kimochiii Koishitai!, 2012’s Bakken Record wo Koete, and the 1997 Young Thugs: Innocent Blood movie.
