#E. Jean Carroll may sue Donald Trump again, as he appeals $5 million judgement

Plaintiff E. Jean Carroll and defendant Donald Trump

WASHINGTON – As Donald Trump began the appeal of a $5 million sexual abuse and defamation judgement against him, E. Jean Carroll and her attorney said Thursday they may file another lawsuit against the ex-president over his caustic comments since the trial.

“It’s just stupid, it’s just disgusting, vile, foul, it wounds people,” Carroll told The New York Times when asked about Trump’s criticism of her and the verdict during a CNN town hall on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, Trump was found liable by a jury of sexually abusing Carroll during a 1996 incident and subsequently defaming her. On Wednesday night, he called her a “whack job” and said she made up the story. Some of his comments drew laughter from the pro-Trump crowd gathered in a town hall setting in New Hampshire.

At one point, Trump said: “I have no idea who this woman − This is a fake story, made up story.”

A jury in New York believed Carroll’s story, declaring Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation and ordering the former president to pay her $5 million in damages.

Also on Thursday, Trump’s attorneys filed a formal notice that they would take their case to the U.S. 2nd Circuit of Appeals. In other comments, Trump has criticized the judge and some of his procedural rulings about what evidence could be presented to the jury.

Last year, Carroll sued Trump under a new New York state law that gave victims a one-year window to sue alleged attackers in cases where the criminal statute of limitations had run out.

In addition, Carroll has an earlier defamation suit that is still pending. Trump has sought to have that case thrown out of court because he says he made the comments in question while serving in his official capacity as president.

Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, told The New York Times that they will make a decision soon about yet another lawsuit: “Everything’s on the table, obviously, and we have to give serious consideration to it.”
