” “Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL” gambled on: Does the new game principle buck?

I was watching the latest game in the «Yu-Gi-Oh!» anime series. Can the new game principle of «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL » convince? You’ll find out in the test!

«Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» appeared recently for iOS- and Android devices and is particularly popular with fans of the anime series. After Konami was able to give me an insight into the game at Gamescom, I can finally lend a hand myself. Is the game as fun as it says on paper?

The game modes of «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL»

Unlike classic card duels, «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» on multiplayer duels with up to four players. In addition to a ranking list mode (4-player versus mode), there is a tag team mode in which you and a partner compete against two other players. There is also Raid Duel, which is a 4-player co-op mode. Here you have to fight together against a raid boss. Then there’s the event mode, which is sort of a story mode where you play through different stories alongside a character from an anime. Depending on the mode, you don’t necessarily have to be four to duel. You can also prove yourself alone against raid bosses or AI-controlled opponents.

Cross Duel: A new gameplay for «Yu-Gi-Oh!»

The gameplay of «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» clearly stands out from the classic TCG and has a dynamic and fresh approach. The playing field is set up in a cross shape and each duel has a total of 8 main and battle phases by default. There are players opposite, to the left, and to the right of you. Each player can Summon up to three Attack Position or Defense Position monsters. Depending on where you place your monster cards, you attack a different opponent. In the battle phase, the monster cards automatically advance one space. The monster cards must advance two squares to directly attack the opponent’s life points. Of course, the opposing players want to prevent that and place their own monsters in the same positions with which they want to get my life points.

If monsters come together in the battle phase, the monster whose attack points exceed the attack or defense points of the other wins. The special thing about fighting in Cross Duel is: The monster that emerges victorious from a fight is weakened! The value of the fallen monster is subtracted from the victorious monster, giving it fewer attack points for the next few turns.

Additionally, there are also three slots for Trap Cards, which activate themselves once the conditions are met. Spell cards are at «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» played by the game hand. However, this is only possible during the battle phase and before the monster cards start moving. You have a short period of time to use magic cards. Some monsters have special abilities. For example, Signature Monsters such as the Blue-Eyes White Dragon can instantly destroy any monster on the field. Each signature monster has its own special ability. Normal monsters can also have abilities, but you have to unlock them by boosting them.

In the case of a direct attack on life points, the life points deducted from the opponent are credited to your own account. You can accumulate up to 8000 life points through direct hits. A fight at «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» Ends when a player’s or team’s life total drops to zero or when all game turns are complete. In the latter case, the party with more life points left at the end wins. As you can see, at «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» A tactical approach is called for, since you not only have to deal with one, but with up to three opponents at once and at the same time have to pay attention to and react to the constantly changing values of the monster cards and the various magic and trap cards.

by the way: You can also create custom rooms in which you can adjust some game parameters or rules yourself. For example, you can start with more or fewer life points.

The reinforcement of monster cards

At “Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» you have the opportunity to strengthen your own monster cards and expand their abilities. For this you have to use certain materials. Additionally, you can unlock more ability slots by sacrificing a duplicate card for it. Some abilities can only be used in certain modes, so use caution here too. Because you can only get materials through duels and missions, and depending on your ability, a large amount of materials can be used.

You can get new playing cards in «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» by completing missions, events and card gacha. Card gacha uses crystals or tickets to draw cards. Just like a booster pack in the TCG game, you get different cards that have a higher or lower probability of being drawn depending on their rarity. You get crystals and tickets through missions and events, alternatively you can also buy them for real money via the shop.

My impression of «Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL»

«Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» has a very dynamic and fresh approach, which I still enjoy after several hours of play. The game offers a tactical depth that has never been seen before in a «Yu-Gi-Oh!»-Game gave. Sure, it sometimes requires a lot of thinking skills from you, because in a duel you have to keep track of several things at the same time. However, that’s exactly what bucks the game in my opinion. It’s a great feeling when you can beat three other opponents at the same time in a match. You don’t always win, but you never end up empty-handed as a loser. In addition to experience, you also get materials, crystals, etc. that you can use to strengthen your deck. If you don’t feel like competing with others, you can face AI opponents in event mode or play cooperatively with others in raid mode. A varied gaming experience is therefore already taken care of. Only the grinding factor could get annoying in the long run, but this factor is pretty low at the moment. The game will also be constantly expanded in the future with new maps, events and more. I’m curious how”Yu-Gi-Oh! CROSS DUEL» will develop. Information and news about the game can be found here on the official website.
