#Suzume, The Boy and the Heron Earn Best Feature Nominations

The nominees for the 51st Annie Awards have been announced. Anime movies Suzume and The Boy and the Heron are both nominated for Best Feature, against Nimona, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Suzume and The Boy and the Heron also earned nods in a number of other categories, including:

• Best FX — Feature (Suzume)
• Best Character Animation — Feature (both)
• Best Direction — Feature (The Boy and the Heron)
• Best Music — Feature (both)
• Best Production Design — Feature (The Boy and the Heron)
• Best Storyboarding — Feature (both)
• Best Voice Acting — Feature (Suzume)
• Best Writing — Feature (both)

Additionally, The Boy and the Heron‘s composer Joe Hisaishi will be presented with the Winsor McCay Award, which recognizes “lifetime or career contributions.”

Suzume (directed by Makoto Shinkai) and The Boy and the Heron (directed by Hayao Miyazaki) were the most high-profile anime films that were released in the US in 2023. Both were nominated for the the Golden Globes’ Best Motion Picture – Animated, which The Boy and the Heron took home, making it the first anime movie to do so.
