Good Smile Hits Pause on US Pre-orders Due to Tariff Situation

In light of the ongoing tariff saga weaved by the current US administration, Good Smile Company U.S. recently announced that new pre-orders on Goodsmileus.com will be temporarily paused, and that US-bound shipments will be delayed “until further notice.”

“This decision was not made lightly. The unpredictable nature of the current tariff environment has created significant challenges in both cost and logistics, and we want to ensure that we can continue providing the level of service and transparency you expect from us,” said the announcement.

Good Smile U.S. says that fulfillment will resume as usual when “this situation becomes more manageable.” Assuming that tariffs are still in play when it’s time to ship “and if a fee must be added to your order, we will provide ample notice — including the option to cancel should you prefer not to proceed.”

Another noted impact of the tariffs are price changes, which “reflect the current tariff conditions.” Orders will be adjusted “to reflect a lower price accordingly” if the situation improves before an item is ready for shipping.

The current tariff situation, which began in February with the announcement of tariffs on Canada and Mexico, has been a continuously evolving story marked by confusion and unpredictability, due in large part to the US administration’s messaging and the handling of exemptions and delays.

Similar to Good Smile U.S., this month saw the Square Enix Store pausing “some new merchandise pre-orders” due to “ongoing international tariff uncertainties.” Meanwhile, fellow figure company Kotobukiya said that “As of April 14, 2025, these changes are making it challenging for us to maintain current pricing, and like many importers, we may need to adjust prices if the tariffs remain in place.”

Books are believed to be exempted from the current tariffs, but manufacturing costs may increase.

Various industries, from farming to tabletop gaming, have been affected by the tariffs, which have targeted dozens of countries including China and Japan. China is currently facing a tariff level of 145%, which, according to US president Donald Trump on April 22, will “come down substantially, but it won’t be zero”.
