“Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Has Now Made $27.7 Million in the US”
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has made US$27.7 million in the United States, Box Office Mojo reported on March 27. Combined with its overseas takings, the movie has grossed US$144.6 million so far.
The movie earned US$14.8 million during its opening weekend (March 18-20) in the country. It remained in the top 5 for its second weekend (March 25-27), but saw its placing go down to fifth after ranking second last weekend. It also saw a “massive -69.1% drop-off from the previous session,” with the movie making US$4.58 million in the second weekend.
In Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 climbed up slightly on the all-time rankings, with the title now being the 19th highest-grossing film with almost 13.2 billion yen (~US$106,702,200).
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 debuted in Japan on December 24, 2021 and began MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema screenings on February 5, 2022. Southeast Asian and North American screenings began in March.
The movie is adapted from Gege Akutami‘s Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga, which was first serialized in Jump GIGA in 2017 for four volumes under a different title and later published as a single volume manga in November 2018. It is a prequel to Akutami’s main Jujutsu Kaisen series, which began in March 2018 and received an anime adaptation in 2020. Both fall under the Jump Comics label.
VIZ Media describes the story as:
Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?
The main staff of the film includes Sunghoo Park as director, Hiroshi Seko as scriptwriter, Tadashi Hiramatsu as character designer, and Yui Umemoto as assistant director. All of them had previously worked on the Jujutsu Kaisen series. MAPPA is the animation production company. Meanwhile, the cast includes Megumi Ogata as Yuuta Okkotsu, Mikako Komatsu as Maki Zenin, Kouki Uchiyama as Toge Inumaki, Tomokazu Seki as Panda, Yuuichi Nakamura as Satoru Gojo, and Takahiro Sakurai as Suguru Geto.
