The Ranma 1/2 manga by Rumiko Takahashi debuted in the 36th 1987 issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday and ended in the 12th 1996 issue of the magazine. The romantic action-comedy manga originally inspired an 18-episode anime that began airing in 1989. This was followed by Ranma ½: Nettou-hen, which ran from 1989 to 1992 with 143 episodes.

The previous anime were produced by Studio Deen and had Atsuko Nakajima (Komi Can’t CommunicateHaven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto, Trinity Blood) as character designer. Tsutomu Shibayama (Chibi Maruko-chan co-director) directed the first series while Koji Sawai (.hack//Legend of the Twilight) and Junji Nishimura (Vlad Love, Extreme Hearts) co-directed Nettou-hen.
