After things have slowly returned to normal and the cinemas open, “Detective Conan” is also coming back with a new feature film adventure. Our editors were on site and watched the film, but was it really worth the long wait …?

In the well-known manner, Detective Conan is returning to German cinemas. The now 24th film was convincing and for me is one of the stronger offshoots of the series. The subject of the Maglev maglev train, the concept of which was developed in Germany, brings a breath of fresh air to the young detective’s feature film adventures. The entire functionality behind it was explained in the film in a really easy-to-understand way, which is why the strip also offers added value in terms of knowledge.

Nevertheless, it remains exciting and action-packed with appearances by the FBI, Masumi Sera and other important characters that have not yet been seen in German-language anime. Only the many repetitive elements and the same dramaturgy give the film a little damper. In my opinion, the production team has to venture more and deviate from the well-known concept of success.

Nevertheless, “Detective Conan: The Movie (24) – The Scarlet Ball” is a really good film, which boasts strong animations. The German soundtrack, which was recorded again in the Oxygen Sound Studios Berlin, is of high quality and gives the film the finishing touches with high-quality localization. Karin Lehmann is again acting as a dubbing director and all of the well-known dubbing actors are back on board.

The shuffling Kogoro

Every year a new “Detective Conan” film is as certain as the amen in church – well, almost. Due to the corona, there was no new stripe for the first time in 2020, which could now be made up for this year. But you probably couldn’t really use the extra time. After all, the film was ready by the original cinema date.

Unfortunately, this is also reflected in the movie itself, in which the tried and tested action was relied on again. The plot becomes very unrealistic, especially towards the end. The capabilities of the Akai family also seem to be of supernatural proportions. Incidentally, this is the first time that the full cast is appearing in the film series. Here it was an advantage if you already knew what happened in the German version of the anime. The most important thing, however, was also explained in the obligatory intro announcement by Conan.

As far as the animations are concerned, I unfortunately cannot agree with the previous speaker: Since a part of the film that should not be suppressed consists of chases and exterior views of the Maglev, we unfortunately get to see loads of CGI again in the latest movie. The well-known extras from the computer are also celebrating a prominent comeback – hand-drawn background characters are unfortunately now more of an exception.

After all, the usual bombs were not used this time. Instead, something more unusual has been thought of for the perpetrator, which I appreciate. I also remember the opening scene of the 24th strip positively, as the color scheme and background music was very successful. In one point, however, the film was definitely able to convince me: with one of the funniest closing gags of the series.

Now that the 24th film has now also been shown in German cinemas, one would almost think that the authors can no longer come up with anything new. But the film clearly stood out from its predecessors. Also, the entire Akai family was shown in a movie for the first time. But the integration of the characters did not always work well. Mary hardly had any important moments in the film and she seemed very redundant. Rather, it became clear that it was only brought in to make the whole family a theme in the film.

The case of the kidnapping series was interesting overall and steadily increasing and was good for entertaining me. I also liked the installation of the Maglev, as the subject of magnetism is important throughout the film. A Conan film can hardly do without action scenes. Even if these were very unrealistic, I really liked the installation of these elements. The background music in particular worked very well. Especially since in addition to the classic elements such as the soccer belt, the usual voice actors are all there again and do a good job. The only negative thing about the cinema experience was that the subtitles were shown on a black bar. This was not the case with previous Conan films in theaters.

The film ended with the theme song, which I like very much.

Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, the last “Detective Conan” films were all disappointments for me. Now I was curious whether the 24th film, postponed by the corona pandemic, was more convincing. It quickly became clear: no.

The film starts out interestingly, but quickly falls back into old patterns. Characters are rarely introduced and, as is so often the case, only defined by their profession. Therefore, as a viewer, you can’t identify with the film characters either, this has been around for a long time, and unfortunately it was not tackled this time either.

The plot is unfortunately very lengthy and boringly told and can’t help but bring up the usual “all over the top” action scenes. In addition, there are the stiff animations that come along this time with extremely eye-catching and inexpensive CGI (also in the foreground).

The only bright spot was the extremely convincing great performance of the German voice actors including the newcomers. The dialogue direction and the dialogue book were, as one is used to from Karin Lehmann, fantastic.

So all in all a very below-average film, which, however, was greatly enhanced for me by the very good dubbing.
