#What Halloween candy came out the decade you were born?

While far older than today’s youngest trick or treaters, many popular American candies were created just a few decades ago.

Knowing what candy debuted the decade of your birth may not have astrological significance, but it is a fun way to get a better sense of the treat-scape when you were born.

Read on to find out what beloved sweets came about closest to your birthday.

1940s

A dark time for much of humanity, the 1940s did also see the debut of a number of candies that are still household names today. M&M’s first hit shelves in 1941, Bazooka bubble gum began in 1947, Almond Joys were born in 1948, and Smarties started in 1949, Fox reported

1950s

The post-World War II years were the birth time of two non-chocolate favorites: cinnamon-flavored Hot Tamales came out in 1950, and Pixy Stix in 1952.

1960s

In a decade defined by hippies and the counterculture, three candy favorites also came onto the scene. Starbursts were introduced in the UK in 1960, initially going by the name of Opal Fruits and hitting US markets closer to the end of the decade, in 1967. The gummy sour treat Haribo Goldbears were born in 1960, and pucker-making Lemonheads came out in 1962.

1970s

This pivotal period of change for human history also saw some history-making additions to the packaged dessert market, including Skittles — first brought to UK shelves in 1974 — and Pop Rocks, the crackling candy born in the US in 1974 whose production reportedly involved the loss of a chemist’s finger. Reese’s Pieces was introduced in September 1978 — and originally was named PBs.

1980s

The decade of arcade games and oversized glasses also saw the birth of Nerds in 1983 and Sour Patch Kids in 1985. “One of the driving forces behind Sour Patch Kids growth was its success in cinemas, and it became a staple for moviegoers in the U.S.,” reads the website of confectionary snack food company Mondelēz International, which owns the brand.

1990s

While not quite as iconic as those candies born in previous decades, Hershey’s Cookies ‘N’ Creme bars — created in 1994 — brought a modern classic for the ’90s.

2000s

Also not quite on par with the innovative treats of decades prior, the early 2000s did see Jelly Belly Candy Company (Goelitz prior to a corporate name change in 2001) begin producing the “Harry Potter”-inspired Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans in 2000. The original Jelly Beans were born in the 1960s.
