#Song You Need: Bad Bunny’s reunion with Arcangel is no nostalgia trip

“Song You Need: Bad Bunny’s reunion with Arcangel is no nostalgia trip”

“La Jumpa” appears on Arcangel’s new album SR. SANTOS.

The FADER’s “Songs You Need” are the tracks we can’t stop playing. Check back every day for new music and follow along on our Spotify playlist.

When an artist becomes one of the biggest pop stars in the world, it’s always a treat to watch their early music videos. Before Bad Bunny conquered stadiums and streaming platforms worldwide, he was a Latin trap artist out of Puerto Rico making heaters like “Tu No Vive Asi” with Arcangel. Peep the music video, a gritty clip with more quad and motorbike wheelies than Meek Mill’s “Ima Boss,” accompanying a song about conquering everything by any means necessary. That’s quite a distance from this year’s Un Verano Sin Ti and “Ojitos Lindos,” right?

Despite their shared history, Bad Bunny and Arcangel don’t settle into old habits on “La Jumpa,” a new song from Arcangel’s album SR. SANTOS. You might think that’s the path at first: a menacing, echoey melody fills the speakers, and just when you think some rattling 808s are about to drop in, a four-on-the-floor kick drum arrives, signaling the song’s shift to a house-inspired thumper. There are a few unmistakable sonic allusions to Arcangel and Bad Bunny’s beginnings, but for the most part, “La Jumpa” is eager to take the rare chemistry shared by the two artists into new territory.
