#Eva 3.0+1.0, Jujutsu Kaisen Score Anime of the Year Award at TAAF 2022

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time and Jujutsu Kaisen have won the Anime of the Year award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2022, with the two titles scoring in the movie and series category respectively.

Meanwhile, the individual awards saw some TAAF 2021 winners repeating their wins from last year. These include Akira Matsushima (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc) in the Animator category and Yuki Kajiura (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc) in the Sound and Performance category. This year, however, Kajiura is sharing the win with her Demon Slayer co-composer Go Shiina.

Elsewhere, Hideaki Anno (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0) scored two wins, one in the Original Work and Screenplay category and the other in the Director and Episode Director category, while Yuuichi Terao (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc) won in the Background, Compositing, and Visual category. IDOLiSH7: Third Beat! won the fan award.

TAAF’s winners page noted that its judges are composed of parties from “the forefront of the anime industry,” including producers, creators, and stores involved in selling media and anime goods.

TAAF began in 2002 as part of the Tokyo International Anime Fair, where it was called the Tokyo Anime Award. TAAF became independent in 2014. In TAAF 2021, Violet Evergarden: The Movie and Keep Your Hands off Eizouken!  were the respective movie and TV category winners of the Anime of the Year award.

TAAF 2022’s judges voted based on a list of 100 anime, 20 of which are movies. These 100 titles were determined by fan votes. Shows that were released between October 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021 were eligible for the awards.

TAAF’s categories tend to be broader in scope than their names may suggest. For instance, the Animator category also recognizes other aspects such as character designs, mecha designs, and chief animation director work, while the Sound and Performance category covers not only soundtracks and voice acting, but also audio recording, sound effects, and more.
