The Kia EV6 Crossover just received its official EPA rating, and the company has now confirmed it’ll offer nearly best-in-class range when it arrives early next year. Kia’s EV6 has been a long time coming, and now we know it’ll offer upwards of 310-miles per charge.

In terms of the design, the EV6 sits on the automaker’s new E-GMP platform, which will power Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis EVs moving forward. As a comparison, Hyundai also recently announced the EPA rating for its highly similar Ioniq 5, which tallied in at 303-miles per charge.

For those keeping track, the Kia EV6 will offer the second-longest range in its class, thanks to that EPA rating of 310 miles. The only other electric crossover to provide a higher driving distance than Kia’s latest is the Tesla Model Y, capable of 326-miles per charge in the costly ‘long range’ variant. So while Kia came in second, given the expected $45,000 starting price, it’s undoubtedly positioned well.

Kia’s stylish EV has an 800V electric car platform, E-GMP, allowing ultra-fast charging where the car battery can go from 10 to 80-percent in just 18 minutes. Kia also announced that the EV6 would have four separate powertrain configurations. The main entry-level models both have rear-wheel drive. The entry-level EV6 includes a 58kWh battery and a single 167 hp (125 kW) electric motor, while the second option offers a bigger 77.4kWh battery pack and a 218 hp (162kW) motor.

For what it’s worth, the second option with a bigger 77.4kWh battery pack is the model that landed the impressive 310-mile EPA rating. Here’s what Kia had to say about the other configurations.

“The top rating of 310 miles AER applies to EV6 when configured with a 77.4 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, including EV6 GT-Line RWD and EV6 EX+ RWD. This rating represents an impressive overall efficiency of 4.0 miles/kWh. EV6 models fitted with all-wheel drive are EPA-certified at 274 miles AER, and the 58.0-kWh EV6 EX is rated at 232 miles AER. These range figures are a testament to the efficiency of EV6 in motor performance and aerodynamics.”

So while some of the more exciting all-wheel-drive variants will only deliver 274 miles per charge, that’s still right up with the best of the best in this segment. Of course, that’s before we start talking about the cool heads-up augmented reality screen for MPH and navigation that’ll project right onto the windshield or the sizeable 12-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

The Kia EV6 will initially come in three unique color combinations: matte grey with a black interior, white with a green interior, or yellow with a black interior, and is limited to just 1,500 units. We’re still expecting a $45,000 starting price tag when it becomes available in early 2022.
