The master of Japan's most terrifying gambling challenges is making the jump to the stage, as Kaiji prepares to go live in Tokyo and Kyoto this December.

The Gambling Apocalypse: Kaiji stage show will be directed by Akira Yamazaki of the Warui Shibai theatrical company. Playwrights and Caramel Box theatre company co-founders Azuki Mashiba and Yutaka Narui provide what is being promised as a script very faithful to the original manga.

Also appearing in the play will be Kousuke Kujirai (Kousuke Oohira in the Gokusen live-action drama) as veteran gambler Jouji Funai, and Ryouma Baba (Blue Buster in Go-Busters) as strategic fellow gambler Kitami.

Nobuyuki Fukumoto's manga Kaiji explores a world of dangerous underground gambling as the title character puts his life on the line to escape poverty and loan sharks. The long-running series has also become an anime, a series of live-action films, and even a television program featuring recreations of some of the challenges.

Gambling Apocalypse: Kaiji will run December 4-6, 2020 at Kyoto Gekijo, then December 10-13 at Hulic Hall Tokyo.
