“#Sumikko Gurashi Returns to the Corner with Sequel Film in 2021”

Some quick news for fans of cute mascot characters: a sequel theatrical anime film has been announced for Sumikko Gurashi, the roly-poly San-X characters that are a little bit anxious and that prefer to stay in the corner rather than being the center of attention. The new film will hit Japanese theaters in 2021, and it features animation production by Fanworks and distribution by Asmik Ace. A new illustration by Yuri Yokomizo (above) was published to celebrate the announcement of the film.

The previous Sumikko Gurashi film, Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu Eihon to Himitsu no Ko ("Sumikko Gurashi the Movie: The Pop-Up Book and The Mystery Child"), was released in Japan in November of 2019. The film follows the adventures of the Sumikkos after they get magically transported into a book of famous fairytales.

Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu Eihon to Himitsu no Ko was a surprise hit with audiences, and it sold some 1.22 million tickets during its theatrical run.
