#Studio Khara Offers Guidelines for Evangelion Fan Content, Asks Fans to Not Lewd Characters

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time

The anime studio (and full rights holder) behind the Evangelion franchise released some guidelines today on how the franchise can and can't be used by fans for content made by them. Some of the measures make sense, like not using the series and the characters for commercial use, but others may be a little far gone for the franchise, especially when Comiket starts back up.

The rules, in Khara's own words, "are to allow fans to create fan art with peace of mind", and state that the guidelines aren't for commercial companies, and for any company that wishes to use the Evangelion property to contact Khara. Though Khara does state that if your a fan of the franchise and use a service like Patreon or YouTube, you may use video and audio as "quotations" (see: fair use) and have monetization that way, but all your content can't just be Evangelion-based.

Khara also stated that the fan work can't promote racism, bigotry, and be against any/for any type of politics. It can't be grotesque or too violent, infringe on the rights of others, or be pornographic. That last point may be an issue as ever since the franchise started, the series has had a strong presence at doujinshi events such as Comiket, where some of the fan-made works there may not be the safest for work.

These guidelines have been released ahead of a collaboration between Evangelion and pixiv, where the artist community website will be holding a project over the next 6 months under the theme of Evangelion in various circumstances. Contests will also be held on the site and affiliated apps. The project starts on January 19 just before Evangelion 3.0+1.0 releases on January 23.
