#RNC 2020: Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng says Trump will stand up to Beijing

A prominent Chinese human rights activist urged Americans to vote for President Trump in remarks Wednesday at the 2020 Republican National Convention, saying he has stood up to China during his term in office.

Chen Guangcheng said former US administrations had pursued a strategy of appeasement with Beijing. “The US must use its values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, to gather a coalition of other democracies to stop China’s aggression,” Chen said.

“President Trump has led on this and we need the other countries to join him in this fight. A fight for our future.”

The blind Chinese dissident is a fervent supporter of President Trump.

A lawyer who spoke out against China’s one-child policy and campaigned for the rights of workers, Chen was placed under house arrest over his activism.

He fled the communist country in 2012 and received asylum in the US.

“The CCP [Chinese Communist Party] is an enemy of humanity,” Chen said. “It is terrorizing its own people and it is threatening the well-being of the world.”
