#Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island could reopen next week, report says

Two of New York’s biggest attractions — the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island — could reopen as soon as next week, according to a new report.

A spokesman for the National Park Service told NBC New York that the landmarks are still on track to reopen next Monday if New York City moves into Phase Four as coronavirus infections continue to fall.

“We are closely watching to see that New York state’s Phase Four reopening remains on track and will make a determination based on that,” the spokesperson said.

All regions in the state have reached Phase Four except for the Big Apple at this point.

Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio are expected to make that decision in coming days but the city is anticipated to begin easing restrictions on July 20.

Under the plan, masks will be mandatory on ferries traveling to both Liberty and Ellis islands but will be optional at the monuments themselves, the park service source told NBC.

Under Phase Four, some schools across the state will be allowed to reopen for in-classroom learning, Cuomo said at this Monday press conference.

Zoos, museums and historic sites will also be allowed to reopen on Monday but Broadway won’t return until 2021.

Gyms and movie theaters will also remain shut.
