#South Korea holds emergency meeting amid Kim Jong Un’s sister’s threats

South Korea called a emergency security meeting Sunday after the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened military action against the neighboring country.

Kim Yo Jong, who is a trusted aide to her brother, referred to South Korea as the “enemy” Saturday night and warned that she would allow the military to decide how to retaliate over defectors from the North sending back propaganda and food.

“I gave an instruction to the arms of the department in charge of the affairs with enemy to decisively carry out the next action,” she said in a statement to state media.

Her remarks prompted South Korea’s national security director, Chung Eui-yong, to hold an emergency video conference Sunday morning with ministers in charge of security and military generals, according to the presidential office.

The Unification Ministry, which handles relations with North Korea, later said the government is “taking the current situation seriously.”

“The South and the North should try to honour all inter-Korean agreements reached,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Defense Ministry also said separately it closely monitors North Korea’s military — and its own is prepared to respond.

The relationship between North and South Korea has deteriorated in recent months, with some experts suggesting that Pyongyang is frustrated over a lack of progress in nuclear talks with the Trump administration — negotiations supported by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
