#Snow slams US from Midwest to Mexico border

A massive dose of winter weather is burying much of the US in snow and ice, with millions of Americans from the Midwest to the Mexican border getting slammed with frigid storms.

More than 2 million people in Texas have lost power in widespread blackouts amid record freezing temperatures, while ice and snow forced officials in Louisiana to shut major highways, the Weather Channel reported.

The slippery conditions caused a 14-vehicle pileup on I-110 near Whiskey Bay in the Pelican State early Monday, including three jackknifed tractor-trailers, WAFB-TV reported.

In Texas — where Gov. Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration — three people died over the weekend in storm-related accidents near San Antonio, KSAT-TV said on Monday.

In Oklahoma, where a fiery pileup shut down the westbound lanes of the Turner Turnpike on Sunday, Gov. Kevin Stitt activated the National Guard as temperatures are due to drop to the lowest levels in 100 years, according to CBS News.

“Oklahomans, please pay attention to travel conditions and help us conserve energy where you can as this winter storm continues,” Stitt wrote on Twitter Sunday night.

The massive storm was expected to continue sweeping across the country and could pile up as much as an inch of ice along a wide swath of the nation Monday — as far east as Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia, the National Weather Service reported.

“There (have) been numerous reports of accidents from icing recently,” NWS lead forecaster Bob Oravec said. “I think there’s going to be a big threat today as the system pushes northeastward.”

Up to a foot of snow was also forecast for across the southern Plains on Monday.
