“#Simu Liu Denies Rumors He’s in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”
This year, Simu Liu made his MCU debut as the star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. A sequel is officially in the works, so we know that Liu will be back in the role soon enough. It’s common for MCU characters to cross over into other movies and shows, so we may revisit Shang-Chi before that sequel is released. The rumors that Liu might be involved in Doctor Strange 2 have made it to the actor. Here’s what the actor had to say about them, per GQ.
“Even if I were in that movie, which I’m not, there is no way in hell that I would ever say it out loud. That’s all I can really say, right? Nah, I’m kidding.”
It seems obvious that Liu or any other actor who’s secretly attached to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise early. You’d think that, but things didn’t exactly work out that way with the production of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Alfred Molina, who reprises his Spider-Man 2 role as Doc Ock in the new film, let it slip early that he was coming back. This wasn’t what Marvel wanted, though they embraced the leak by featuring Molina at the forefront of the film’s marketing.
Producers may be more vigilant this time around with keeping a lid on potential spoilers. Marvel will also be looking to top what happened in Spider-Man: No Way Home, so they might be looking to go big. There have been rumors of the X-Men showing up in one way or another, and some fans are wanting to see a confrontation between Jean Grey and Scarlet Witch. Bruce Campbell has also been teasing a cameo thanks to his pal Sam Raimi directing the film, but the role he’ll be playing is unknown.
Scott Derrickson was originally on board to return to direct the second Doctor Strange film, but after he dropped out, Raimi stepped in. The Spider-Man helmer directs using a screenplay by Jade Halley Bartlett and Michael Waldron. The sequel stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022. As for Simu Liu, he will return as the titular superhero in the upcoming sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film, which also brings back director Destin Daniel Cretton, does not yet have an official release date.
