A gunman opened fire during a Christmas show with singing carolers on the front steps of St. John the Divine Cathedral in Harlem on Sunday, police and reports said.

The gunman, who was in a red jacket, had been firing into the air, law-enforcement sources said. He was shot by a responding Emergency Services Unit officer and is in critical condition and not expected to live, sources said.

Police had received about a dozen 911 calls from the scene saying shots were fired around 3:45 p.m. — prompting chaos as people fled in terror and took cover behind cars, sources said.

Officers outside the famed church at West 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue saw the gunman firing his weapon, an NYPD rep told The Post.

“He was shooting it up in the air and toward police,” a high-ranking department source said.

Officers fired at the man, and he was hit and taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where he was clinging to life, sources said.

The shooting came during a scheduled free Christmas carol performance on the steps of the historic church by the Cathedral Choir.

The performance was the cathedral’s first public event since the coronavirus pandemic hit the Big Apple.
