#Shawn Mendes drops ‘Wonder,’ fans wonder about Camila Cabello

Apparently Shawn Mendes has been all up in his head during his quarantine.

The “In My Blood” singer-songwriter, 22, is lost in a sea of thoughts on his new single “Wonder,” which dropped on Friday.

As the sweeping ballad begins, Mendes muses, “I wonder if I’m being real / Do I speak my truth or do I filter how I feel? / I wonder, wouldn’t it be nice / To live inside a world that isn’t black and white?”

Later, as rumbling drums add to the dramatic atmosphere, he delves deeper into self-examination: “I wonder why I’m so afraid / Of saying something wrong, I never said I was a saint / I wonder, when I cry into my hands / I’m conditioned to feel like it makes me less of a man.”

His reflections, though, ultimately turn romantic: “I wonder what it’s like to be loved by you.” The lyric calls to mind his relationship with fellow musician Camila Cabello, which they both insist is still going steady. He recently said she inspired the upcoming album, and that he can’t wait to see her again after spending a month apart.

The song — the title track of Mendes’ upcoming fourth studio album, due Dec. 4 — is certainly no “Señorita.”

In the equally sweeping “Wonder” video, also released Friday, Mendes takes a train ride, runs through the forest and approaches the edge of a cliff. He even busts a few modern-dance moves along the way.

What exactly it all means isn’t clear. But the clip captures the expansiveness of the song, which builds to a big, grand-scale finish complete with choir.

Through it all, thankfully, there’s no mask covering Mendes’ pretty face. And for a studly splash, the pop heartthrob rocks a wet tank top.
