#Scott Derrickson on Possibility of The Black Phone 2, Says ‘There Could be More’

“Scott Derrickson on Possibility of The Black Phone 2, Says ‘There Could be More’”

“I’m very excited,” said Scott Derrickson when asked about The Black Phone becoming available on Digital on August 12, 2022, and then on Blu-ray and DVD on August 16 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. “I hope that it becomes a sleepover movie that teenage kids like to watch at each other’s houses,” he added.

The Black Phone hauled over $100 million at the box office and sits at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Given its success, we asked Derrickson about any possibilities for another movie.

Will The Black Phone 2 Ever Happen?

Currently, there is no confirmation on a sequel or prequel of The Black Phone, however, it is certainly of interest to audiences and those involved in the making. Derrickson had even teased this idea prior to the release of the first movie.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“It’s something I’m very open to. Of course, the studio would like that because it was such a big hit. But my gosh, the movie is still in theaters. I haven’t had time to really contemplate what that would be yet. But I’m certainly open to the idea because I do love it and the characters. It feels to me like there could be more,” said Derrickson.

As for now, Derrickson has a big movie that he’s set to do next but is unable to provide further information about it.

Ethan Hawke in The Black Phone

“Ethan’s my favorite actor I’ve ever worked with,” said Derrickson, “he’s very creative, and it all seems effortless when he’s doing it. He’s a fearless actor and I think he trusts me as a director, after Sinister especially, and I think that trust was part of what enabled him to let loose and do some of the amazing things that he does in the movie,” said Derrickson.

He also noted that he initially wasn’t sure if Hawke would want to play The Grabber due to the nature of the character, recalling that Hawke replied that he probably won’t but not for the reason that he thinks, but more so because The Grabber is a villain. “I had never thought about it that way until he said that to me… I can’t think of a villain role that Ethan Hawke has done,” said Derrickson. Nonetheless, Hawke read the script, and the next morning, Derrickson awoke to a voicemail on his phone from him, “in the voice of The Grabber, saying one of the lines from the script. And that was his way of telling me that he liked it and was in.”

The True Motive of The Grabber

Although never definitively revealed in The Black Phone, there have been various fan theories as to what The Grabber’s motives are. Derrickson says that the information is there, though he’d never want to define it for the audience.

“We put the information in there that we thought was the information that would allow the audience to speculate. I think that the best movie villains are not easily defined in terms of their motivation, or why they do what they do. Why is the Joker an anarchist? I love the fact that he asks people if they want to know how he got his scars and then tells us like four different versions. So, you really have no idea what happened to him, and that adds mystery, and that mystery adds power. These sociopathic killers tend to be very mysterious. Sometimes they have trauma in their background… but oftentimes they don’t… I think it does a disservice to both the true world nature of people like that, and it does a disservice to storytelling when you try to wrap all that up in some simple backstory,” said Derrickson.

Why The Grabber Wears a Mask (Spoiler Alert)

Although Derrickson didn’t want to give a definitive answer as to what The Grabber’s motives are, he did provide insight on why The Grabber wears a mask.

“I think what is evident in the movie is that the mask is something that allows him to be himself. He feels comfortable in it, and that he definitely either bought the masks or built the masks and utilizes them as a means of intimidation, as a means of striking fear in his victims. I think each piece of the mask that he chooses, when he chooses it, he chooses for very specific reasons to get a very specific emotional reaction from his victims. And I think that’s really interesting, and that’s why it’s a very telling moment in the final fight when the top half of his mask is ripped off, and he freaks because he cannot be seen… that was Ethan’s idea to have that big of a reaction, and it just felt very truthful to me and the character that he had portrayed throughout the room,” explained Derrickson.
