Considered one of film’s most memorable villains, the character was originally played onscreen by Louise Fletcher. The actress won an Academy Award for her portrayal as the terrorizing nurse that ends up lobotomizing Jack Nicholson’s McMurphy.
The eight-episode series from creators Ryan Murphy and Evan Romansky will arrive Friday, September 18, on the streaming platform. Described as a suspenseful drama, the series follows asylum nurse Mildred Ratched’s origin story.
In 1947, she arrives in Northern California looking for employment at a psychiatric hospital where new experiments on the human mind are being implemented. On a mission, Mildred presents a pristine exterior of what a nurse should be but a growing darkness is hidden under her stylish shell. This story proves that true monsters are made and not born.

Inspired by the characters of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Ratched stars Sarah Paulson, Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Jon Jon Briones, Finn Wittrock, Charlie Carver, Alice Englert, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo and Vincent D’Onofrio. The series is executive produced by Murphy, Paulson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Aleen Keshishian, Jacob Epstein, Jennifer Salt, Margaret Riley, Michael Douglas, Robert Mitas and Tim Minear.
